Werner and his team make their way through Europe. Werner uses the transmitter to look for enemies, and Volkheimer and Neumann One kill them once their found. Werner sees war up close and is often filled with homesickness and dread. He also starts to see that German is in trouble, and their war effort is beginning to fail. Werner finds many enemy transmissions and his team is promised rewards for the good job they are doing. Werner sees prisoners of war and shocked at the brutal treatment they are given. Etienne decides to join the resistance and broadcast the messages Marie-Laure brings to him. Marie-Laure gets these numbers by going to the bakery and purchasing bread, the bread contains a slip of paper, on it is numbers (coordinates) or messages to the community. Etienne also buys Marie-Laure the braliile book she had to leave behind when she fled Paris. Werner and his group are summoned to Saint-Malo, where they’ve been told enemy broadcast are being cast (Ettienne). Von Rumpel is called to determine the worth of different jewels. He realises all these jewels have come from the Jewish population of Germany. In the end of the section Etienne sees Madame Manec as a ghost in the street.
