In the beginning of this section Werner goes with Fredricks to his house in Berlin. He is blown away by the size of the city and the luxurious house Frederick lives in. When back at school all the students are instructed to throw a bucket of water on a dying prisoner. Werner does it, but Frederick refuses, and throws the water onto the ground. By the end of this section Fredrick has been so badly beat up by his classmates that he is permanently disable and has significant brain damage. Werner continues to make advancements with the transceiver. When Hauptmann is called to Berlin, he writes to the school and gets Werner out into the war, lying about his true age. Marie-Laure is upset by her situation, but decides to study the model her father has made. Madame Manec, the housekeeper allows her to go outside, and Marie-Laure is thrilled when she gets the explore the beach. Marie-Laure meets a World War One veteran named Hubert Basin, who shows Marie-Laure, a secret door leading to a small cave with small sea-creatures in it. He secretly gives Marie-Laure the key the the door. He then disappears. Madame Manec organizes a small resistance group in Saint-Malo and tries to get Etienne involved but he refuses. Towards the end of the section Madame Manec becomes incredibly sick and ends up dying. Marie-Laure receives a letter from her father saying he has been taken prisoner, but he assures her he is safe. Von Rumpel begins to track down the Sea Of Flames. The reader learns he has cancer, and thinks the stone will cure it.

- A cold morning in February the cadets are raised from their beds at 2 am and sent outside where they find a skeletal looking man in mismatched shoes being tied to a stake
- Bastian tells the cadets the man escaped from a work camp and tried to steal milk, he assures them this man would kill any of them in the blink of an eye

- The major feels optimistic as all he requires from the man is not even a name, but a number
- The letter seen is apparently from Marie's father from Germany
- He assures his daughter he is happy and eating plentifully

- Frederick is elected three more times as the weakest in nine days and loses the running each time

Chapter 74 The Rounds
- Madame Manec and Marie continue their daily voyage to the ocean, much to Etienne's disapproval
- Marie can now lead herself to the water
- Marie has grown very fond of collecting memorabilia from the shores and keeping it in her room
- The scent and distinct energy of Madame Manec nearly ensure that Marie cannot separate herself from her
- Marie meets a homeless veteran with half a face he lost to shellfire
- Marie reminisces on her old life and becomes sad, which is washed away by light and color and wind
- Marie explains what seems to be forming into a daily routine in her life
- Dr Hauptmann and Werner meet at midnight in the fields preparing a radio test
- Hauptmann has challenged Werner to find Volkheimer using multiple transceivers
- Werner is given a small hint by Hauptmann, using this he is able to locate Volkheimer
- Werner uses protractors, equations to come up with vectors and distance, giving him his friends position
- After consulting his compass, Werner stumbles upon the giant
- A half drunk Hauptmann initially points his gun at a sleeping Volkheimer but instead shoots into the air springing the giant into action
- Werner and Volkheimer bond on the way back planting seeds to a larger friendship
- Marie sits around a table with nine women, all whom complain about their current living arrangements
- Madame Manec speaks of how the women here run ‘their’ world and without them it could not function
- Madame Manec inquires about who is willing to help, leaving six women left after this remark

- Frederick receives an increasing amount of criticism from his comrades, most of whom call him names and some of whom defecate in his sleeping areas
- Werner's field testing and practice is improving at a radical rate, the success of which is very beneficial to him
- Werner know Volkheimer will collect his pension and be sent to war in two months
- Frederick and Werner speak quietly in the night, Werner suggests he leave and come back so the other boys are occupied with something else, Frederick believed if they aren't friends any longer Werner would benefit and succeed

- The doctor tells Von Rumpel he requires a biopsy and he should call his wife
- Werner notices the peculiarity of Fredericks absence
- Throughout the day he hears many stories each of which conflict with each other, as if the truth is a machine whose parts don’t function
- Werner goes to the infirmary and fits a single bed coated in blood and a nurse
- Werner inquires what happened, the nurse does not respond. Werner asks ‘where is he?’ to which the nurse responds in surgery
- Werner asks when he will be back and the nurse seems unsure how to answer his question
- Werner seems to have a small panic attack, thinking immediately of his sister and what she is doing at this exact moment
- Another letter is written from ‘Daniel’ to his daughter
- He write a joke for Marie
- Daniel says he is working on a road and his body is getting stronger, he writes of a oak tree disguised as a chestnut
